Cover for the things you own and the liabilities you carry — home, shop, travel, personal accident. The policies nobody thinks about until the year they matter.
What this actually does for you
Your home is probably your largest uninsured asset
Households insure a five-lakh car and leave a fifty-lakh home bare. Structure and contents cover costs surprisingly little against what it protects.
A business interruption is a double loss
Shop and SME policies cover not just damaged stock and premises but, with the right add-on, the income lost while closed.
Personal accident fills a gap term insurance leaves
Term pays on death. Personal accident cover pays on disability — the scenario where income stops but expenses rise.
Travel mishaps are cheap to cover and expensive to face
Overseas medical bills, lost baggage and cancellations cost a fraction to insure compared to facing them uncovered.
Honestly, who should and shouldn’t
✓ This is for you if
- You own a home — whether or not a bank made you insure the structure
- You run a shop, clinic or small business from physical premises
- Your household income depends on one person remaining able to work
- You travel abroad, where uninsured medical costs are genuinely dangerous
- You keep meaningful contents — equipment, appliances, jewellery — at home
✕ This isn’t for you if
- Almost nobody entirely — the honest caution is against wrong cover rather than no cover
- You expect maintenance, gradual wear or unexplained loss to be claimable; they are excluded
- You are underinsuring the structure to trim premium — underinsurance scales every claim down proportionately
- You want investment features; general insurance is pure protection with no maturity value
- You are buying travel cover after the trip has already gone wrong
When this belongs in your plan
Rented-home contents cover and travel policies — small premiums, real protection.
Home ownership arrives. Structure, contents and personal accident become core.
Assets peak. Business cover, higher contents values, and policies reviewed together.
Home cover continues; travel cover needs age-appropriate variants with honest disclosure.
5 steps
- 01List what you actually own
Structure, contents, equipment, vehicles, and the liabilities attached to each.
- 02Insure the structure at rebuild cost
Not market price — land does not burn. Rebuild cost is the honest number.
- 03Value the contents realistically
Walk the house room by room. Most people are startled by the total.
- 04Add personal accident cover
Sized to income, covering disability as well as death.
- 05Diarise the renewals
General policies are annual and lapse silently. One reminder covers all of them.
Read this before you commit
Insure a home at half its rebuild cost and the insurer may pay every claim at half — not just the total-loss one. It is called the average clause, and it surprises everyone it meets.
Wear and tear, gradual deterioration, unattended property, undeclared business use — the wording decides the claim, so read it before the event.
Policies bought after departure, or claims for conditions not disclosed, fail predictably.
Standard contents cover caps individual items. High-value pieces need listing, sometimes with valuation.
Photographs, invoices, FIRs where applicable. The claim experience is decided by what you can show, and the time to prepare is before the loss.
Common questions
Is home insurance worth it if I own outright?
More so, arguably — no lender forced you, so nobody is covering the largest asset you have unless you do. Structure cover is inexpensive relative to what it protects.
What is the difference between market value and rebuild cost?
Market value includes land, which fire and flood do not destroy. Structure insurance should be set at the cost of rebuilding the building itself.
Does personal accident duplicate my term insurance?
No. Term pays on death. Personal accident pays on death and on disability — including the partial and temporary disabilities that stop income without ending life.
Are shop policies only for large businesses?
No. Standard SME packages cover small shops, clinics and offices — stock, equipment, premises, and optionally the income lost during closure.
What do these policies never cover?
Gradual wear, poor maintenance, unexplained disappearance, and losses from undeclared use. The exclusions list in the wording is short reading and worth doing.
